Introduction

After 5 years of building site (1995-2000) Museum of Bourgoin-Jallieu (ex Victor Charreton Museum) reopens in wonderful restored buildings. Fitting out in the heart of the city of Bourgoin-Jallieu (ancient chapel built in 1503 and hospital from the 18th century), it spreads out on 3 levels offering big places of exhibitions. Contemporary building in façade symbolizes its rehabilitation.

Nearby Lyon, the Museum of Bourgoin-Jallieu asserts itself like an original and dynamic textile museum in France and Rhone-Alps; it's the only pole which presents textile ennoblement (witch means the different final stages of textile processing) therefore fabric printing history (engraving, photoengraving, printing). From the first printing stamps to the last computing technologies, it testifies the know-how which hands down from more than 2 centuries in that region of Isère.

The first printing manufacture established in Jallieu in 1787. After the First World War activities are flourishing, reaching its prosperity around 1925-1930. The entire region lives at the rhythm of textile workshops, of which one of the most important like Brunet-Lecomte employees 500 persons. The successive economic crises jointed to major technical evolutions reach from the 50's permanent closure of many manufactures. But competences are always alive, and Bourgoin-Jallieu is still an industrial setting. In the past manufactures have been working for every European kingdom, nowadays craftmen and industries of Bourgoin-Jallieu work for haute couture: Balmain, Cardin, Dior, Givenchy, Hermès, Saint-Laurent.
The museum tells this history since the 18th century to nowadays, giving its place to local enterprises: a specific place of exhibition is dedicated to them. Many poles of demonstrations conduct the visit. The museum enhances the fabrics: printed, colored, furniture fabrics or clothing, it testifies to know-how of this region.

In the museum there is also a department dedicated to a local painter: Victor Charreton (1864-1936), founder of the museum in 1929. Born in Bourgoin-Jallieu he belongs to post impressionism movement.

Society museum, Musée de Bourgoin-Jallieu is also a resources pole for the Northern Isère heritage; it is dedicated to enhance territory wealth.
